Cover Story - Top 10 Golden Age Captain America Covers

Hello and welcome to Cover Story, diving as little into the world of comics as possible.  This coming week represents the anniversary of Captain America’s creation, a landmark moment that’s being celebrated with a lavish special on ABC alongside the Agent Carter 2 hour premiere.  Given this is also the 240^th anniversary of America’s funding and the premiere of Captain America: Civil War, the third installment in what’s become the definitive superhero franchise of this era, it’s a good time to be Captain America that, I’ve decided to showcase some Cap covers this week.  However, much like Wonder Woman there are so many Captain America comics I could never cover them all in one go so these covers are just the Golden Age Captain America issues IE ones from the 1940s.  So, let’s jump into the shallow end and get the cover story on the top 10 Captain America covers of the Golden Age of comics. 

Prez #2 Review

DC has been doing a lot of new and interesting things lately with micro-continuity, genre fusion, and obscure revivals and all of that comes together in the master piece that is Prez, a revival of a 1973 mini-series I spotlighted earlier this week.  Check out my review of the 2nd issue here

Panel Vision - Prez '73

DC Comics recently concluded a 4-year long branding exercise entitled the New 52.  To do a proper autopsy of the New 52 would require several in depth essays over the course of a small eternity but suffice it to say it’s not really being viewed as a success.  So, as a result, DC is now launching a new branding initiative entitled DC You (puny.)  Probably the most suprising title to come out of the DC You is Prez, a comic set in a not to distant future that plays like a weird cross between Idiocracy and The Zero Theorem as directed by VEEP’s Armando Iannucci.  The books is basically a social satire, spoofing the entire 21^st century miasma of corporate interest, political gridlock, Internet distraction, and public exhaustion with a system that seems ever more absurd.

 It’s a good comic, one of the few books DC’s put out in 5 years to feel grounded in the realities of the now and the broadening reader demographic rather than drawing on the conventional wisdom of the ‘90s.  However, Prez isn’t a new comic, it’s actually a revival of a 1973 4-issue mini-series by Superman co-creator Joe Simon and Jerry Grandenetti, one of the most influential comic artists of all time.
