Film Land - Ghostbusters (2016)

Well, it’s finally here, the movie event that’s been polarizing reasonable people and the hordes of obsessive dorks that fight them all year long: Ghostbusters. Who would’ve thought that such an innocuous little thing as a remake of Ghostbusters would cause so much anger and controversy? To the point of launching  a full-on culture war between the forces of common sense and the powers of unreasonable panic and blatant sexism, it boggles the mind.  Maybe that’s because I was never the biggest fan of the original Ghostbusters.

I don’t hate it or anything but when it finally entered my cultural lexicon I don’t think it was as much of a landmark moment as it was for a lot of other folks.  As such, I’ve always viewed Ghostbusters as a fun idea where the spin-offs were more interesting implementations of that concept than the original, stuff like The Real Ghostbusters or Extreme Ghostbusters are what I really gravitated to.  I bring that up because I say to you now that Ghostbusters 2016 is every bit the equal of the original film, an amazing blockbuster ride from start to finish and easily my favorite entry in the franchise thus far.

Ghostbusters News Round-Up

At the time of writing, we are just a little over 2 weeks out from this summer’s new Ghostbusters film. As we’ve barreled full speed towards the all-women Ghostbusters remake, we’ve had a whole slew of trailers, posters, and behind-the-scenes images about the new film, all of which seems to indicate we’re in for a pretty fun movie. While maybe not the equal of the original, it will be a fun summer distraction and a new merchandising juggernaut for the much-in-need Sony Pictures.

Of course, this build-up has also been accompanied by a cacophony of online whining about the reboot somehow ruining the source material or being an affront against nature; all of it is complete hogwash. Given that, this news round-up on what we know about the movie so far is going to be focused on just the facts, rather dive into the Internet outcry about how this latest reboot ruined everybody’s childhood.

Ghostbusters 1st Trailer

They’re making a new Ghostbusters movie and it’s finally got a trailer.  I’ve been psyched for this movie since they announced the basic plan for a female centric Ghostbusters and then the casting breakdown gave me even more hope.  I’m a massive Kristen Wiig fan and Kate McKinnon has had “super star in the making” looming over her for far too long.  So, if you’re coming here for some harsh angry put down of the very concept of women wielding proton packs then sorry but you’ve visited the wrong shuffle.

What’s more, I’m not really one to regard the Ghostbusters franchise with the kind of holy writ and reverence a lot of folks I know do.  As far as I’m concerned, Ghostbusters is a fun movie and a great handful of shows and comics, not some unassailable classic that should never be updated, reworked, or experimented with.  Maybe that’s just my background being in comics where re-workings are more common but the way I see it, if you aren’t taking the time to invent new ‘Busters and a new team why bother doing Ghostbusters again?  Either way, let’s talk about the trailer.
