Gotham Season Three News Round-Up

We are one week out from the premiere of Gotham season three, subtitled "Mad City."  Gotham is one of the lesser superhero shows currently swirling in the vat of comic book television, mainly owed to poor timing. One of the strange things about superheroes on TV is how sudden and immediate the shift in landscape has been.  

Superheroes have been on TV in some form for every decade since the medium's inception, but it wasn’t till 2013 that people started paying serious attention. That was when Marvel entered the arena with the shockingly underwhelming Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which complemented the equally underwhelming Arrow. 

Then, in 2015, everything changed with The Flash, when it burst out of nowhere to become a high-concept family favorite adventure program. Now every superhero show needs continuity, scope, weirdness, and a real super-powered hook.  

That particular demand screwed up Gotham season three, which was caught in a transition between the grounded noir tone of season one and the out-there demands of season two. Season three now promises a season of monsters and madness. Here’s what to expect.

Hello, and welcome to Comics Rainbow. This week has marked the return of Gotham, Fox’s well-intentioned if not terribly great Batman prequel show, to the airwaves. Though I’m not a huge fan of Gotham, I do get the impetus to do a show like it. Cop shows have been around more or less since the idea of “shows” came about. 

Batman’s relationship with the G.C.P.D. has always been fertile ground for storytelling. This has left the comics with a pretty expansive roster of cops to fill the ranks of Gotham’s character sheet, thanks in no small part to Greg Rucka’s excellent Gotham Central comic. So I decided today we’d get the full spectrum on the many members of the Gotham P.D. in all their shades, shames, and successes.

Hello, and welcome to Cover Story, diving as little into the world of comics as possible. Fox’s Batman prequel show Gotham will be returning this Monday. While I have plenty of problems with Gotham, the basic premise of following the lives of normal police officers trying to deal with the crazy criminals and rampant corruption endemic to Gotham City is pretty great. In fact, I know that’s a great premise because DC comics made it into a superb comic book in the late ‘90s called Gotham Central.  

Gotham Central has done a lot in the modern era to shape the Batman supporting universe, giving focus to characters now considered a base element of the canon like Maggie Sawyer, Renee Montoya, and Harvey Bullock. What’s more, it’s just a superb comic that shows how interesting a story set in Gotham city can be without even needing the Batman.  Let’s dive into the shallow end and honor Gotham’s finest with the Cover Story on Gotham Central.
