Suicide Squad is finally upon us, and surprise, surprise, it’s pretty bad. I haven’t seen it yet, but the critical consensus has been overwhelmingly negative, to the point where Warner Bros. is already gearing up to damage control on Wonder Woman and talk up more Harry Potter spin-off movies. This move is all in the case this whole DC Entertainment Universe thing is a giant boondoggle. It’s a shame because I’m quite a fan of the Suicide Squad comics. 

Not the New 52 series, rather the late ‘80s series by Ostrander or the 2000s comic from Keith Giffen. Given that, and my pathological obsession with topicality, it’s Suicide Squad day here as we dive into the shallow end and get the cover story on the top 15 Suicide Squad comic covers.

5 New Characters Coming To Legends of Tomorrow

At time of writing, Legends of Tomorrow has managed to clear its first major hurdle by completing its 2-part pilot in spectacular fashion.  The team is assembled, the characters are fun and engaging, and the fight scenes spectacular, and the stakes have never been higher within the realm of the CW.  Now that the opening salvo has been fired Legends of Tomorrow is settling in for the long haul, planning a full season’s worth of time travel throughout the crazy corners of DC’s past and introducing even more weird heroes of the DC universe. 

This has always been CW’s greatest strength, a complete embrace of the weirdest and most obscure elements of DC continuity without a hint of irony or self-consciousness over the strangeness of the characters they’re adapting.  That incredible confidence of adaptation seems to be coming to a head now as CW announces 5 new characters to appear in Legends of Tomorrow, some logical like Jonah Hex or Sergeant Rock while other likes Hourman the third and Ma Hunkle are as strange a choice as comic book adaptations are allowed to make nowadays. 

Comics Rainbow: War Heroes

Happy Veterans/Armistice Day everyone, may this day of remembrance for the end of the Great War as well as a general appreciation for all those who serve find you well.  With that pleasantry both stated and in mind I’m going to be talking about war comics today on Comics Rainbow, specifically the war comics of DC but first; a bit of comic book history.  After the end of World War 2 superhero comic books seriously tapered off in popularity with a handful of exceptions like Batman and Superman powering through.  It’s not exactly clear why this happened but the best bet would be the major shift in the tastes of comic readership heralded by the end of the war.  Prior to World War 2 the comic reading public actually skewed older, hence the emphases on pulpy violence like The Shadow, but when World War 2 came most of the comic reading public shipped off overseas and the new readership was much younger. 

However, by the time the war ended that new readership had aged and suddenly had new heroes: their fathers and brothers returned from World War 2.  So, at the dawn of the ’50s there was an explosion of war comic books, the 5 big ones being produced by DC comics and written by inventor of Flash and Lady Cop Robert Kanigher.  As the ‘50s dragged on the 5 major comics (G.I. Combat, Our Army At War, Our Fighting Forces, and Star Spangled War Stories) began to develop a roster of reoccurring characters that ended up permanent fixtures of the DC Universe as the superhero craze reemerged in the ‘60s.  Those are the characters I’ll be giving the full spectrum look at today; shades, shames, successes and all.
