Well, today’s the day, the long-awaited premiere of Ghostbusters 2016.  At the time of writing, I haven’t seen it yet as I’m getting this article out of the way in advance but I’m personally really looking forward to it.  I like the cast; Paul Feig is a amusing director, and I’m thoroughly interested to see the new spins on Ghostbusting this new generation puts together.  In the meantime, Ghostbusters are just dominating the cultural landscape, so I figured I’d join in with this week’s cover story taking a look at the Marvel comics spun out of the 1986 animated show The Real Ghostbusters. 

I already wrote about the series but if you missed that: it was a hit animated series continuing the team’s adventures from the film and fleshing out their characters.  The tie-in comic embodied the visual style and quirky humor of the show and the film perfectly and feature some amazingly good work in this medium.  So, with that said, let’s dive into the shallow end and get the cover story on the top 20 best Real Ghostbusters covers.

This Friday we’ll see the premiere of Sony’s Ghostbusters reboot.  The long awaited revamp of the 1980s comedy classic has had everyone talking pretty much since its announcement. Most of the chatter has been based entirely on gender politics and grousing but let’s not let that taint this particular moment for us.  

Instead, I’ve elected to look back on the Ghostbusters we came from in anticipation of the Ghostbusters we’re headed for.  However, rather than just gush about the movie, which is already rightly regarded as a classic, I’m looking back on the film’s spin-off animated series The Real Ghostbusters. 

I think I can say without any hyperbole of nostalgia goggles that The Real Ghostbusters was the best-animated show of the ‘80s.  I’m coming at this from someone who watched the show as an adult, and it holds up phenomenally well: great voice cast, well-written episodes, tons of great comedy ideas skewering horror tropes, it’s just a terrific series and is honestly leagues above a lot of its contemporaries.  Given that, I’ve elected to rank my top 10 best episodes of the show, with honorable mentions going to The Headless Motorcyclist, Station Identification, Knock, Knock, and Apocalypse- What Now.

At the time of writing, we are just a little over 2 weeks out from this summer’s new Ghostbusters film. As we’ve barreled full speed towards the all-women Ghostbusters remake, we’ve had a whole slew of trailers, posters, and behind-the-scenes images about the new film, all of which seems to indicate we’re in for a pretty fun movie. While maybe not the equal of the original, it will be a fun summer distraction and a new merchandising juggernaut for the much-in-need Sony Pictures. 

Of course, this build-up has also been accompanied by a cacophony of online whining about the reboot somehow ruining the source material or being an affront against nature; all of it is complete hogwash. Given that, this news round-up on what we know about the movie so far is going to be focused on just the facts, rather dive into the Internet outcry about how this latest reboot ruined everybody’s childhood.
