Another day, another casting announcement from CW.  Seriously, at this rate, I should really have a whole dedicated column just for reporting on new DC Comics characters coming to the cavalcade of CW superhero shows. This latest news ties to The Flash, which means it has an extra strange bit of significance to it. In case you didn’t know, The Flash’s upcoming 3^rd season is being split into very distinct halves, in a manner greater than usual. While every CW season is split in two, season 3 of The Flash will have two different story arcs; the first one is known as Flashpoint followed by a mysterious second story in the latter half. 

The Flashpoint story, in which the Flash alters time to save his mother and father and creates a bizarre alternate present, is interesting, but I suspect this major casting announcement is tied more to the mystery story of season 3B. I’ll get into how as we go on, but for now, let’s start with what the big casting news is: Ashley Rickards will be playing a woman version of the classic Flash foe The Top.

As the Summer continues to slip away, major news has finally started filtering through about the upcoming fall seasons of the various superhero TV shows that have emerged out of society’s new favorite genre.  This means news from the CW; they’re the reigning gods of this arena with a quadruple shot of hit shows in Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl.  I’m going to be dedicating a ton of coverage to CW announcements, so you might as well settle in for this stuff because it’s going to get cacophonous. 

Starting out with The Flash, the recent definitive news to come out of season three is that Gray Damon of Aquarius and Star-Crossed will be coming to the show as the villainous Mirror Master. In and of itself, this isn’t necessarily huge news, but the nature of this character and the things he relates to in the Flash mythos could spell major upheaval for a new season already steeped in altered timelines and weird time-travel hooliganism.

One of the biggest stories of superhero TV in 2015 was the rise of Legends of Tomorrow, the first team superhero TV show to be produced in live action and not cut together from repackage Japanese TV like Power Rangers.  The first season was a pretty big hit, working through some ups and downs to deliver a fun and action packed family adventure show in the vein of Doctor Who or Power Rangers but starring a dynamic and unique team of lovable and engaging heroes. 

Now it’s season 2 time which raises a slew of questions, most especially because season 1 was so tied to defeating the immortal tyrant Vandal Savage and, spoilers, that’s what the team did at the end of that season.  This has raised the question of what season 2 will be about but the first details are now filtering through and, aside from a pretty interesting synopsis, the big news is that Legends of Tomorrow season 2 will feature the Legion of Doom as their new antagonists. 

Static Thoughts - The Flash Season 3, What's Next?

The Flash season 2 has come to its conclusion and what a conclusion it was. As the title suggest, I’m going to be discussing what could happen in the immediate aftermath of The Flash’s major season 2 reveals and twists, so if you haven’t seen the finale yet, beware of spoilers ahead. 

At the end of the show, Barry foiled the villainous Zoom by managing to summon the time wraiths, the undead monsters that defend the timeline and the speed force that consumed Zoom and dragged him off to parts unknown. However, victory came at a high price as Zoom had killed Barry’s father Henry Allen, a loss compounded by the discovery that Zoom’s prisoner was the Henry Allen of Earth-3 AKA the real Jay Garrick.  

In the face of so much loss and flirting with the dangers of time travel once more, Barry chose to travel back in time and save his mom from being killed by the villainous Reverse Flash, causing catastrophic reverberations through the timeline.

So, this latest Flash episode featured the first major super villain team-up of the show.  This is something that’s been building for Flash for a long time, mainly because in the comics Flash’s bad guys work together all the time.  Villain team-ups have always been a special event within comics but the Flash’s foes, nicknamed the Rogues, have always been unique amongst them.  Part of this comes from most of the Rogues having low level powers, compared to how indomitable Flash’s super speed powers are.  Really though, what binds the Rogues together is that they’re unique amongst comic book villains.  Most bad guys are psychotic killers like Batman fights or megalomaniacs like Superman battles, the Rogues are all just common criminals, crooks trying to get by.  Given that Flash is dedicated to slowly introducing more and more of the Rogues, I figured now would be a good time to do a Guide to the Flash’s Rogues. 

Legends of Tomorrow 2nd Full Trailer

Legends of Tomorrow is the next step in the amazing experiment that is CW’s shared DC Comics TV universe.  This ambitious project had a difficult infancy, struggling through a pretty rocky start with the first couple seasons of Arrow as little more than a Batman knock-off.  Then Flash happened and it was poor to mediocre at first, right up until CW hosted its first crossover episodes and found they could get a winning combination of sitcom antics, melodrama, and comic book action.  Since then both Flash and Arrow have improved immensely, embracing a broader and more accepting view of the DC comic universe where pretty much anything from the comics is free game to adapt to TV. 

So far Flash’s first season and a half alone have featured time travel, psychic apes, the speed force, and parallel realities while Arrow has branched out to include Ras Al Ghul, the Lazarus Pit, and Magic.  Now, with Legends of Tomorrow CW looks to reinvent the superhero wheel once more with their own Justice League.  Now, after a bit of a reshuffle owing to the departure of Robbie Amell’s Firestorm and CW wanting Legends of Tomorrow to run longer than intended, we’ve got our first trailer for DC’s first live action multi-hero team-up and it looks amazing.
