One of the more frustrating elements of the so-called “DC Entertainment Universe” is that WB’s general apathy as producers means that the slow drip of information about their various projects is even slower and sparser than their competition. Where Marvel usually sets up bad guys or McGuffins in other films or designs a long stream of character reveals and posters, WB tends to favor stand-alone movies with little fanfare to the various characters revealed within them. That is unless they’re trying to turn audience opinion around. 

That’s why WB was so happy to dump Doomsday in the central trailers for Batman v. Superman or told everyone Wonder Woman was in the movie, or why the marketing for Suicide Squad was ALL about the quirky tone and nothing else. That same casual indifference reared its head again this week as James Wan and WB announced the villain of their upcoming Aquaman movie will be the long-time Aquaman villain Black Manta.

So the popular DC comics fighting game Injustice is officially getting a sequel, and the first trailer and gameplay footage are now dropping. Your excitement over this fact may vary based on whether or not you thought Injustice was a super hardcore, awesome experience or a sludgy fighter with junky controls, flaccid character design, and a story that started at ‘outwardly moronic’ and just got worse as it went along. 

I’m in the latter category (Can you tell?), so I’m not terribly enthralled by the prospect of MORE Injustice. The new game looks to be aping the worst aspects of Destiny’s bizarre quasi-freemium set-up. Instead, let’s talk about the story that “inspired” Injustice. By inspired, I mean Injustice ripped it off wholesale while draining the characterization and nuance. Let’s talk about the best episode of the animated Justice League series, and the best version of the “superheroes take over” story; let’s talk about "A Better World."

One of the big trends of the 2010s has been the rise of superheroes on TV. Honestly, it’s not that surprising. Superheroes are built from the ground up for syndicated storytelling, and the episodic format of television is a much better fit for that than the limited scale and structure of a film. We’ve had fun and exciting adventures like Supergirl, weird and wonderful adaptations like Flash, thoughtful exploration of the genre like Jessica Jones, and adventurous explorations like Legends of Tomorrow. Now, David Goyer and Syfy plan to add a new name to the roster of superhero television with a Superman prequel show following the Man of Steel’s grandfather Seyg-El entitled Krypton, following the same naming and focus convention of Fox’s Gotham.

Gotham is a show with a lot of problems, but the junky prequel set-up is a big one. David Goyer has managed to write 1 genuinely good superhero movie on his own, so a lot of folks are rightfully worried. However, I’m not quite as cynical (or possibly just more delusional), so I’ve compiled a list of 10 DC comics elements that could show up in Krypton that would make it an awesome experience; let us list them. 

Static Thoughts - The Doomsday Sanction

So, Batman v. Superman’s latest trailer has revealed the major plot point that Doomsday, the monster who killed Superman, will be the film’s ultimate boss.  For my part this isn’t that surprising a reveal, I’ve been hearing rumors Doomsday would pop up in the film for awhile now.  At the same time, it’s pretty clear the execs running the DC/WB branch are the same ones who helmed things back in the ‘90s when The Death of Superman was the biggest moneymaker in the world for them so it fits they’d try and fit their new Superman movie to that template somehow, they did the same thing with Batman in Dark Knight Rises. 

What is surprising a lot of fans is the major shift to Doomsday’s origin in the film, now seemingly a mutation or GMO created out of the corpse of General Zod.  That’s a nifty idea and an easy solution to how incredibly convoluted and byzantine Doomsday’s comic book origin is, which is why this isn’t a look at the character’s history or even his biggest storylines.  I’ll probably talk about comic book Doomsday somewhere down the line but for right now I’m zeroing in on the first time Doomsday’s origin was altered to be the genetically modified superior Kryptonian: in Justice League Unlimited.
