Let’s not drag this out. Captain America: Civil
War is the 3rd film in the Captain America series and will be
the 13 Marvel Studios film overall.
Picking up in the wake of Avengers:
Age of Ultron it follows the new team of Avengers led by Captain America
and backed financially and logistically by Tony Stark who’s adopted
quasi-retirement. The film swirls
around an international incident that causes the world governments to question
the necessity of the Avengers overall and, at the very least, how smart it is
to allow them to run around completely unsupervised leading to legislation to
bring the heroes under the control of the government. The decision brings a split between heroes as Iron Man
supports the decision while Captain America opposes it owing largely to its
impact and relation to his lost friend and comrade Bucky Barnes the Winter
Soldier. The division splits the
heroes down the middle all while sinister forces seek to manipulate the
situation and now it has a trailer and it’s great.
Firstly; great trailer, tells you everything you needed to
know about the film and honestly a bit more that was only suspected as well as
setting a mood that’s engaging and serious without being overly dour and
bludgeoning. The palette here is
most reminiscent to Captain America:
Winter Soldier, which makes sense given the Russo brothers have returned to
helm this installment as well as the next Avengers film: Infinity War. The
opening sequence, picking up right around where we last saw a bit of Civil War in the ending teaser of Ant-Man, seems to feature Bucky trapped
in some kind of vice for reasons unknown.
The sequence is interesting mainly because the dialogue suggest Cap
knows something we, and Bucky, don’t about the forces coming to get them. It’s been rumored a lot of this film
will hinge around Bucky and that certainly seems to be the case though a bit
more than first thought, mainly it looks like Bucky is being framed by those
shadowy forces I mentioned for whatever big international incident set the world
off on its superhero registration kick.
Speaking of the superhero registration we get our first
glimpses of it here in the form of General Thunderbolt Ross and the Sokovia
accords. Ross last showed up in
the Marvel cinematic universe in 2008’s underwhelming Incredible Hulk and has been a little conspicuous by his absence
since then so it’s nice to see him making a return. It’s been rumored he’s become the Red Hulk for this film but
if that’s the case he’s not showing any signs of it here. He makes sense as the person to bring
the governments concerns about the superheroes to their doorstep given he’s a
general with experience fighting probably the most powerful super being on the
planet. His presence definitely
confirms that there are forces within the US government that want the Avengers
on a shorter leash. What he’s got
with him are the Sokovia Accords, named after the country that was decimated
during the Avengers fight with Ultron last film. This actually isn’t the first hint we’ve gotten of Sokovia
being the flashpoint for change as there was an Easter egg in Ant-Man featuring a news paper headline
demanding “Who’s To Blame For Sokovia?”
Speaking of Ant-Man he’s strangely absent from this trailer
as are the Vision, Maria Hill, Sharon Carter, and Spider-Man. All of those characters are slated to
be in the movie but it’s definitely starting to seem like their part is going
to be downplayed for the final version.
That makes sense for some folks like Vision whose powers are so
incredible he’s probably holding back from getting involved for fear of causing
major damage while Spider-Man’s cameo was only recently shot but it’s still odd
Maria Hill is so excised given her rather substantial role in Winter Soldier and the Avengers
film. However, we do get our first
onscreen look at Black Panther, who’s allegedly remaining neutral but will end
up working with Tony to try and capture Bucky as Bucky killed his dad. Black Panther looks perfect, decidedly
creepy in that Batman kind of way while his stony silence and badass moves make
him look like a force to be reckoned with. We also get this awesome shot of Team Cap running into
action against Iron Man’s forces confirming that regardless of who shows up
where we’ll be getting some big superhero smack downs.
Going back to team Iron Man, I think this is the first time
we’ve seen Iron Man and War Machine share the screen since Iron Man 2. War
Machine was there during Sokovia but he and Tony never teamed up so it’s good
to see them back together even though it seems like bad things are coming their
way. My biggest take away from
this trailer though is the sense that there won’t be any winners here. Tony is always looking incredibly
haggard and like he’s holding back over the course of the film while Steve’s
actions seem to be getting darker and darker and this shot of Bucky trying to
literally rip out Tony’s heart suggest that maybe Steve shouldn’t be so eager
to throw everything on the line to help his bro. There’s still no footage yet of confirmed villains Baron
Zemo or Crossbones or Martin Freeman as the British PM so we’re obviously not
seeing the whole picture yet but if this whole thing ended with Cap realizing
the Hydra bad guys had used his friendship with Bucky as a weak point to lead
him down the path to hell without ever realizing it I could believe that would
fuel the kind of heroic sacrifice that a lot of folks have theorized this film
will end with.
