I find myself a little stymied on how to proceed in breaking down this latest Wonder Woman trailer.  As we barrel towards the June release date, I find myself more and more confused by the growing optimism surrounding the film.  Actually confused isn’t the right word- I know why people are psyched for the movie it’s just that at this point the anticipation is starting to feel more like lower expectations and whistling past the graveyard.

I don’t mean to sound negative, it’s just that the Wonder Woman trailers haven’t promised the second coming that so many are regarding it as and this latest trailer serves as a perfect example of that feeling.  Actually, the true embodiment of my feelings on Wonder Woman is the atrocious theme by Hans Zimmer.

Zimmer hasn’t really done anything impressive this decade but the Wonder Woman theme is easily his weakest modern piece, a confused medley of electric guitar and vaguely Mediterranean riffs that feels completely out of place for this character.  Maybe this is because Zimmer’s ‘Now We Are Free’ from Gladiator is already the perfect theme for Wonder Woman but still, the new theme lacks a clear identity and is just too much of a heavy war tune to fit the ambassador of peace.

And yet I still see people praising it, individuals who were actually condemning not too long ago now saying it’s a great ending to the trailer and not a completely out of place button.  It all makes me wonder what exactly it is nervous Wonder Woman fans want from this movie, until finally it hit me: they want Wonder Woman to be awesome, and that’s okay.

And so another San Diego Comic Con comes to a close.  At this point, the SDCC exists as a trade expo, showcasing the various upcoming film and television projects the nerds of the Internet can obsess over for the next year.

SDCC has made Marvel Studios king of the castle for the last several years, but, if we’re honest, this year and last year Marvel has been pretty underwhelming in their SDCC presentation. This year, Marvel’s heightened security and strike prohibition of filming makes it hard to get on board with a lot of their announcements.

At the same time, pretty much all of their announcements were casting news, mainly revolving around Spider-Man: Homecoming and Black Panther. While I’m looking forward to those films, the roles announced have all been small.

It’s a neat fact that Michael B. Jordan is playing Killmonger or that Tom Rivolo is Flash Thompson. Those aren’t barn burner announcements.  Thankfully, there were two pretty big casting announcements made: the first being Kurt Russell will be playing Ego, the living planet, in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2.

It’s been a strange year for DC Entertainment. After the unmitigated disaster of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, as you can see through its underperforming at the box office its status as a cultural punching bag, DC has been in a weird swing of damage control. They’ve been doing everything they can to convince people Suicide Squad is a fun and quirky flick instead of another grim and oppressive failure, and there was a major change in the executive forces that control DC Entertainment.

Nearly 4 months after Dawn of Justice, DC came into San Diego Comic Con’s Hall H prepared with a major new launch platform and the promise that they could do better. The center piece of their launch at proving their own worth the viability of the DC promise (letting individual creative directors flex their muscles on projects) was the first trailer for 2017’s Wonder Woman. It’s amazing.

1st Photos From Wonder Woman

So far, this year has been a pretty great time for female representation in geek media.  Supergirl had massive popular success and is easily the most successful the Superman franchise has been since the 1996 animated series, Mad Max: Fury Road gave us Furiosa, one of the all time most bad ass women ever, Jessica Jones is making major waves on Netflix, Agent Carter found a small but dedicated fan base, Hunger Games’ finished its series run, and in the world of comics we got hit new series like Prez, Paper Girls, Jem & The Holograms, Devil Dinosaur & Moon Girl, Spider-Gwen, and the continuing success of Ms. Marvel.

In the midst of this expanding openness towards female characters in traditionally male dominated spaces it makes sense that Wonder Woman is on the cusp of returning to live action, first next year in Batman v. Superman and then in her own movie in 2017.  Now, we’ve got the first pictures of Wonder Woman from her upcoming movie and she looks amazing.

Chris Pine Starring In Wonder Woman

As we continue to barrel ever closer to DC’s ill advised cinematic universe like a runaway train, early details are starting to filter in on their next few films.  It’s honestly pretty unlikely that many of these will come to pass if Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice doesn’t land but for the time being let’s all just keep humoring DC/WB that this grim, gritty, worst of the ‘90s universe they’ve concocted is really worth following up.  The latest news to come through relates to Wonder Woman, DC’/WB’s summer 2017 blockbuster that will follow Suicide Squad and precede Justice League.  Wonder Woman has been in the cards for a while now as she’s probably the third most recognizable DC hero of all time as well as an easy entry point to the fantasy genre that has proved so lucrative for WB in the past.
The main reason we haven’t seen her on screen yet is probably owed to a combination of apathy and sexism.  WB has never shown all that much interest in actually making superhero films that don’t star Batman and for years studios worked off the thinking that women couldn’t like genre films and men wouldn't like a genre film with a female lead.  That’s obviously a stupid idea and after the Marvel juggernaut WB couldn’t keep its head in the sand over superheroes much longer hence the upcoming Wonder Woman film.  However, our first major detail, that Chris Pine will be playing Wonder Woman’s long time love interest Steve Trevor, makes me raise an eye about this production.
