Cover Story - Top 12 Tomb of Dracula Covers

It is currently the dregs of August, and there’s really nothing going on in pop culture.  The dizzying high of summer blockbuster season has given away to the drippy sludge that is the late August offerings while the fall awards season has yet to begin.  If there is one small bit of comfort in the pre-labor day dark, it’s that we’re entering the season of fall TV premieres, which is perfect for someone like me that clings to media topicality as a guiding light in these troubled and rudderless times.

This week will be bringing us the premiere of the latest season of The Strain, FX’s prestige vampire apocalypse show from the mind of Guillermo Del Toro (he wrote the books it’s based on.)  Even though I don’t like The Strain all that much it is pretty much the only name in vampire fiction these days, thank Twilight, which means I get to talk about the biggest name in comic book vampires- Count Dracula.  I’ll get more into this as we go along but for a time in the ‘70s Count Dracula was one of Marvel comics biggest success stories and today- we honor that legacy.

What could Fox's 2 mystery superhero films be

Well it wasn’t a boring February, that’s for sure.  Between the racial kerfuffle of Gods of Egypt, the critical explosion of The Witch, and the smash hit that was Deadpool February has finally achieved its longtime goal of being a month worth discussing.  And with this unexpected boom of importance comes a shift in priorities, most specifically the priorities of Fox.

In the wake of February Fox has apparently scuttled this fall’s proposed Gambit movie and announced 2 unnamed new superhero films for 2017 and 2018.  Given that the only thing we know about these movies is that they’re superhero films and I run a column exclusively dedicated to wild speculation on upcoming comic book and superhero fair these are my predictions for what Fox’s 2 mystery movies could be.

Panel Vision - Top 13 Guardians of the Galaxy Covers

A little late I know but in my defense I was very drunk this weekend.  So, in case you haven’t heard, Guardians of the Galaxy was a huge hit last year.  Chances are you probably knew that, what you might not know is that Disney/Marvel is actually looking to capitalize on this success in a more meaningful way than usual by giving the Guardians an animated series.  The show premiered on Saturday and it’s…harmless.  The Disney television animation studio’s seen better days certainly but if you were hoping recent hits like Gravity Falls or Stars vs. The Forces of Evil might signal an uptick in quality temper those expectations.
However, this recent twist of fate is all the excuse I need to showcase the best Guardians of the Galaxy comic covers…of the original team.  Yeah, little known fact but the original Guardians of the Galaxy are a team of genetically altered humanoids and aliens who act as the last resistance of a far flung future where humanity and most of the galaxy has been crushed under the heal of villainous lizard men known as Badoon.  They appeared briefly in the well remembered Korvac Saga and enjoyed a surprisingly long lived solo series, that’s what I’ll be drawing from for this extra large list.

Panel Vision - Top 10 Tales to Astonish Covers

Edited by Robert Beach

I love comic book covers. That shouldn’t come as a major surprise to people, I review comic books on 2 different geek websites and manage my own geek blog with a specific subset of blog post dedicated to comic books; however, I’ve concluded that’s not quite enough comic book worship to fully express my love, so I’ve decided that every other Saturday I'm going to post a listicle of great comic book covers.

Partly this is because, as I mentioned, I love comic book covers, so this is a pretty easy way to produce content quickly.  Starting out with top 10 Tales to Astonish covers, specifically because I reviewed an issue of Groot earlier this week, and this is the comic in which he first appeared.  With that said, let’s begin.

Groot #3 Review

I take a look at the 3rd issue of Marvel's outstanding Groot comic, which features a Silver Surfer team-up, check it out over on Front Towards Gamer:

Roger Corman's Fantastic Four

I take a look at the best live-action Fantastic Four adaptation, the 1994 unreleased Roger Corman B-Movie.  My review is up on All-Comic, check it out here:

Static Thoughts - Animated Secret Wars

If you like this review feel free to 'like' Lido Shuffle on Facebook here or follow me on Twitter here.

With Ant Man hitting theaters this Friday and Marvel’s Secret Wars event still going strong across all titles I thought now would be a good time to take a look at a very strange collision of those two popular trends.  It turns out that the recent films aren’t actually Marvel’s first attempt at a shared universe of material.  The first time Marvel tried the idea was in their massive stable of animated shows that ran across the 1990s.  The universe started with X-Men in 1992 and found another major success with 1994’s Spider-man.  From there it branched out to include animated version of Iron Man, Hulk, The Fantastic Four, and Silver Surfer.
